Waiting Games

How long should I linger after we’ve said goodbye?

A moment? A day? A year? A lifetime?
I watch your figure wane in my mind’s eye
while I build you a shrine in my memory.

Oh how fickle we are.
Look how you curse and beckon me in the same breath.
Am I still as handsome as you remember?
How does my name taste against your cheek?

Is it still sweet and fluid,
like ripe cantaloupe melting on the tongue?
Or, perhaps it fouls the breath, like a decaying molar.

I know I shouldn’t stall
but frankly, I have forgotten myself without you.
Don’t tarry too long, please.

Remind me why summer is my favorite season,
why fresh linen is my favorite perfume,
or why elevators birth desire.

Tell me how you painted the sky on your feet
and swallowed the sun whole.

Good God!
How long should I linger after we’ve said goodbye?
