I Loved You Too Soon

I loved you too soon.
Like the way
school boys
dote, court and wed in between classes.

Or the way
latch onto any stranger
scented with kindness.

You scarcely knew my name,
before I had
abandoned my imagination
in foreign peaks and valleys.

I am cursed
with the affliction
of the infantile
and rejected.

Sit gently, my love.
Breathe sweetly,
for tomorrow’s horizon brings yesterday’s joy,

I have loved you too soon
because I have known what it is like to live without you.
(and I cannot die twice).
